Augmented Reality Aquarium

PROJECT MANAGER + DESIGNER

Overview

This project's sole goal was to collaborate with a customer and address a user experience need for their business. I was placed in a group with two other incredible women, and together we had the opportunity to work with the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium.

Responsibilities

I was given the responsibility of managing our team's project, which included keeping us on schedule and ensuring effective communication. I used Google Drive to provide a central location where the team could readily obtain assets, Trello to create lists for specific tasks, Word to create agendas for each of our meetings, Outlook and Gmail for email sending and receiving. I kept in touch with the customer frequently to schedule meetings, obtain materials, and provide suggestions.

Proposal

In order to connect with the customers who walk through the aquarium I set up a meeting to see how we could best incorporate AR into the aquarium. After some brainstorming with the aquarium we decided there was a need for high school students to get more involved in field trips.

Questions

• How do we keep students attention

• Where should we place the designs in the aquarium

• What can we do to make participation increase

• How can we positively incorporate technology

Goal

Vision Statement

Create a better experience for students and increase participation for field trips.

UI Designs

Keeping inline with color association and learned user habits we created screens that would be easy to read, simple to understand, and educational. The first prototype was for the sloths and after we had decided on a design template it would help guide the next animal along.

Print Designs

Creating print design it allowed us to see what these posters would look like in the aquarium. For the print design we wanted to make sure that it would flow easily with the AR experience. After recording some of the workers of the aquarium saying things about the animals as an introduction video. It was important to make sure to line up the video with the poster so the AR experience of the people coming to life was amazing.

Testing

We brought in 10 high school students, five girls and five boys to get a more accurate understanding. The aquarium allowed us to place the posters were they might be used for future field trips. So, before the students arrived we had complied a list of initial questions, instructions, a test, and post questions. As each student tried to scan the zap code and travel through the AR experience we were able to gain better understanding of the things that were confusing. This allowed us to make the necessary changes for the next updated version of the project.
